Flow chemistry meets grignard expertise: Managing heat and solids with SpinPro

In collaboration with CHEMIUM, we recently completed a proof-of-concept using Flowid’s SpinPro dynamic flow reactor for a fragrance synthesis process based on Grignard chemistry. This work demonstrates the efficient production of a range of industrially relevant fragrance intermediates starting from Grignard reagents generated via CHEMIUM’s continuous MgFlow® technology.

Key process challenges

  • Significant heat release inherent to Grignard reactions.
  • Formation of solid salts leading to potential clogging and process interruptions.
  • Need for precise dosing and tight process control to ensure consistent product quality.

From reaction control to process reliability

While MgFlow® technology is already established for the safe, multi-ton scale production of Grignard reagents with excellent control over heat and multiphase behaviour, downstream transformations remain particularly demanding.

The combination of exothermicity and solid formation often limits scalability and robustness. Poor heat management can drive side reactions, while solids can lead to fouling or blockages. Addressing these challenges requires advanced reactor design and precise control over operating parameters.

Flowid’s SpinPro technology proved highly effective in handling these constraints, enabling:

  • Efficient mixing under multiphase conditions
  • Excellent heat transfer
  • Robust handling of solid-forming systems
  • Stable and reliable continuous operation

Why it matters

This demonstration highlights how combining advanced flow technologies enables safer and more efficient processing of highly reactive chemistries:

  • Improved process control and reproducibility
  • Enhanced operational safety
  • Reliable handling of solid-generating reactions
  • Straightforward pathway from lab to production scale

We were pleased to explore these processes together in Flowid’s FlowLab, supported by CHEMIUM’s continuous Grignard production technology.
